Curry friends take note: this is not your run-of-the-mill Indian. Though more expensive than the usual slop-out-of-the-tough curry house, it's worth extra dosh for light, aromatic mostly north Indian food that won't line your mouth with oil and leave you in a curry cloud for days. The goat aloo falls off the bone and the konkan scallops are tender and swimming in a refreshing and delicate coconut sauce. Watch your dishes being prepared in the open kitchen; take in the elegante surrounds - white tablecloths, polished wines glasses and the al fresco dining room; and enjoy people-watching through glass walls of the restaurant. Excellent service tops off a first-rate experience.

A party atmosphere, pop music and clever menu bring new energy to a classic cuisine.
MY CHOICE of Delhi 'O' Delhi for this Saturday night's dinner is very last minute but the man who answers his mobile couldn't be nicer as he tries to make himself heard over the high-pitched squeals of children behind him.
He calmly takes my details, warning me that his restaurant is fully booked and he'll do his best. True to his word, he manages to squeeze us in and not under the outside heaters.
This Indian eatery has been on my mind and I was jogged into making the booking because we'd whizzed past it the night before. It looked cosy, posh and very happening. "Sounds half Irish, half Indian to me," quipped the wag in the car. He doesn't score an invitation.
Delhi 'O' Delhi's decor isn't traditionally Indian (nor is it remotely Irish) but is a modern space with aluminium window frames, trendy pendant lights, fibre-optics flaring from a simple glass vase and a stainless-steel cocktail bar.

It may be off the King Street strip but curry-heads have had no trouble finding this modern Indian dinner at the base of a new apartment block. That's probably because of the good services and carefully spiced regional (mostly northern) menu. Try goat aloo-flakily rich-sauced meat still on the bone and zingy chicken chettinad, sparked with curry leaves.

Gems in Newtown can be few and far between; but this one’s a real antidote to the plague of bain marie Indian.
Swap the rubbish for quality ingredients, well balanced curries, and cleverly chosen wines (a credit to the sommelier). If you do have to eat on the run, make it one of these freshly prepared curries.

In a town that's known for its cheap-and-cheerful global flavours, Delhi 'O' Delhi stand out from the pack. Settle in to the smart dining room for aloo tikki chat (potato and lentil patties in a yoghhurt and tamarind sauce), excellent tandoori lamb, and the rich, spicy speciality of nehari goat. To finish, desserts of kulfi and gulab jamun (condensed milk dumplings) are fragrant with rose and cardamom.
